For this activity, Jacob worked on four of the tricky words from Phase 3. However, this could be easily adapted to use words from other sets, high frequency words or specific words which your child needs to practise (please see my information section for the order of teaching tricky and high frequency words linked to the phases of phonics).

  • Card
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Blu Tack
  • Magnetic letters
  • Cut and stick the card to make the templates (see photos)
  • Write the words on to speech bubble shapes and stick on to the template
  • Use Blu Tack to stick the templates on to the fridge
  • Place the magnetic letters on the templates in a mixed-up order (see photos)
  • Ask your child to read each word and then make it by unscrambling the letters and placing them in the correct order
  • Ask your child to check to see if they are right
  • Ask your child to practise writing the words on a whiteboard / magnetic board / paper (developing letter formation)
  • I left this activity on the fridge and muddled up the letters again for Jacob to keep practising the words. When he was confident, I changed the words in the speech bubbles for new ones.
