For this activity, Jacob worked with a selection of letter sounds from Phases 2 and 3. I used this activity to see which ones he was confident with. However, this can easily be adapted to use with any others (please see my information section for the order of teaching letter sounds and a guide to the phases of phonics).

  • Pieces of card
  • Pen
  • A selection of objects (starting with the letter sounds you are practising)
  • A large tray (optional)
  • Use a timer or stopwatch. Can your child complete the activity in a set amount of time (depending on how many objects are in the tray)?
  • Have a competition with yourself joining in – both pick a wand and see who can locate an object first
  • Use a timer or stopwatch. Can your child find an object in 30 seconds?
  • Vary the game by seeing how many different objects starting with one letter sound your child can find
